What is the difference between 2% and 5% Lugol’s solution?

The difference lies in the iodine concentration.

  • Lugol’s 2% contains 2% iodine and 4% potassium iodide. In other words, approximately 2 g (≈ 20 mg/mL) of elemental iodine and approximately 4 g of potassium iodide per 100 mL of solution.

  • Lugol’s 5% contains 5% iodine and 10% potassium iodide, making it more concentrated and potent. In other words, approximately 5 g of elemental iodine (≈ 50 mg/mL) and approximately 10 g of potassium iodide per 100 mL of solution.

In summary: the 5% solution contains more than twice as much iodine as the 2% solution, providing a stronger action.
