A reasonable assumption would be that “higher concentration = better product.” With colloidal gold, however, the opposite can be true: low, well-controlled concentrations are more stable and effective than poorly formulated high concentrations. The reason is chemical, not commercial.

The Problem of Aggregation

Gold nanoparticles in suspension exist in a delicate balance: they remain dispersed because their surface charges cause them to repel one another. However, beyond a certain concentration threshold, the particles get too close together and begin to aggregate, forming larger clusters that are no longer on the nanoscale.

When this happens, two things occur:

• The solution loses its characteristic red/pinkish color (caused by the plasmon resonance of small particles) and shifts toward bluish, violet, or brown tones.
• The gold is no longer uniformly dispersed and eventually settles at the bottom of the bottle over time.

Why Technical Concentrations Stay Between 5 and 30 ppm

For this reason, most commercial technical-grade colloidal gold solutions fall within the 5 to 30 ppm range. Above this threshold, maintaining long-term colloidal stability becomes chemically unfeasible without additional stabilizers (which most reputable suppliers prefer not to add).

In Summary

Buying colloidal gold at 100 ppm or higher does not necessarily mean buying “more usable gold.” In many cases, it means purchasing a product that may lose its stability and color within a few months. Well-formulated 20 ppm colloidal gold performs better than poorly formulated 100 ppm colloidal gold.
