How Does Colloidal Zinc Differ from Zinc Salts (Picolinate, Gluconate, Oxide…)?

When someone searches for “colloidal zinc”, they are likely already familiar with other forms: zinc picolinate, gluconate, citrate, sulphate or oxide. There are many chemical forms of zinc on the market, each with a different composition and behaviour. The natural question is: what makes colloidal zinc different?

Zinc Salts

Picolinate, gluconate, citrate, sulphate, oxide… are crystalline compounds. In each one, zinc is chemically bound to another component (picolinic acid in picolinate, gluconic acid in gluconate, oxygen in oxide, etc.). When these salts dissolve in water, the bond breaks and the two components become separated in the solution.

Colloidal Zinc

Colloidal zinc consists of pure metallic zinc (Zn) — the element without being bound to any other substance — in the form of nanometre-sized particles dispersed in double-distilled water. It is not a salt and does not break down upon dissolution: the particles remain in a stable suspension.

This gives the colloidal form two distinguishing characteristics:

  • Zinc retains its elemental form (metallic Zn), rather than existing as an ion combined with another component.
  • The stability of the suspension depends on particle size and water purity, and especially on the packaging: zinc tends to oxidise when exposed to air, so the amber glass bottle and airtight seal are essential for this formulation.

Does Colloidal Zinc Stain, Have an Odour or Taste Metallic?

Three frequently asked practical questions about the sensory characteristics of colloidal zinc at 20 ppm:

Appearance and Colour

Dioxnatur Colloidal Zinc 20 ppm is practically transparent, with a very slight tint. Its concentration (20 mg of zinc per litre) is so low that the solution is barely distinguishable from the double-distilled water in which it is dispersed.

Odour

It has no noticeable odour. If you notice a strong metallic, acidic or unpleasant smell when opening the bottle, this may indicate that the suspension has degraded (zinc oxidation), and it is advisable to discard it.

Metallic Taste

The threshold for detecting zinc varies considerably from person to person. At this concentration, some people may notice a slight metallic taste, while others cannot detect any difference. This is a neutral characteristic of the product and is unrelated to its quality.

Stains on Surfaces

Colloidal zinc at 20 ppm does not stain fabrics, plastics, glass or ceramics. However, oxidation reactions may occur when it comes into contact with metals (particularly copper, aluminium or iron), potentially altering the colloidal suspension and leaving marks on the metal. For this reason, we always recommend handling it with glass or plastic utensils.
